#4 Thresholds and Meanings: The Symbolism of Doorways

Welcome Back!

This week, I’m continuing to share a section of my photographic collection focused on doorways, along with a bit more research I’ve uncovered on the symbolism of the door.

In his 1982 journal article On the Signification of Doors and Gates in the Visual Arts, Michael Moore explores how doors and gates have long been used as powerful visual symbols. He outlines several key interpretations:

1. Functional – as barriers for defence and protection.

2. Sexual – representing bodily openings and associated symbolism.

3. Social – illustrating ideas of exclusion and inclusion.

4. Religious – referencing atonement, salvation, and sometimes death.

5. Socio-political – reflecting the historical and political weight certain doorways and gates carry across cultures.

   
   

It’s fascinating to see how a single architectural element can carry such layered meaning—something I continue to explore visually through my photography.
